About ED

ElDewrito is a free, community-made modification for Halo Online. It enables player-hosted servers, restores removed features, fixes bugs and glitches, expands the features and palette of Forge mode, and adds support for in-game mod loading and mod synchronisation. Players often use “ElDewrito” to refer to the game itself, rather than just the modification.

ElDewrito is free to play. There is a longstanding community consensus against accepting donations or payments for anything related to the game.

History

Halo Online was a planned free-to-play PC game for the Russian market, based on the engine and gameplay of Halo 3. It was tested through 2015 but never reached a full release.

ElDorito began as a project to load into multiplayer maps alone. Its name is a corruption of the game executable name / codename of Halo Online, eldorado. When the project was forked to support multiplayer, the name became ElDewrito. It is difficult to pronounce and a terrible name for a game, but it stuck.

In 2018, following an explosion of attention from the press and Halo community, the team developing ElDewrito were asked by Microsoft to “temporarily halt development”. Some of the team were later invited to contribute to an advisory board for the Master Chief Collection's PC port.

Some time after the original team’s indefinite pause, a new team of community members continued the project, releasing the 0.7 and 0.7.1 updates in 2024 and work continues on future updates to the game.

ElDewrito.info is an unofficial community portal for ElDewrito.

This website was previously hosted at ElDewrito.com and had tighter integration with the team behind 0.6. The domain was transferred to that team, but unfortunately lapsed due to an issue with their registrar and was sold on to a new owner. It now directs people to various spam websites and is not associated with anyone in the ElDewrito project.
