Guide

Installation

Returning from 0.6.1 or earlier? Earlier versions cannot be updated to 0.7.x. You should install 0.7 to a new folder. Do not point the 0.7 installer at your 0.6 installation or copy old files into the new folder.

Before you begin

  • You will need at least 4GB of space, but after a while of installing mods and not tidying up your folder can stretch up to 80GB or so.

1. Obtain the project launcher

  1. Follow the Download link in the navbar or open eldewrito2/ElDewritoLauncher releases on GitHub. Under the release assets, download launcher.exe (not a source-code archive).
  2. Open the launcher normally. Do not use Run as administrator for the launcher or game.

You will probably get a SmartScreen warning when you open the launcher for the first time, saying that it "prevented an unrecognized app from starting". This is normal - the ElDewrito Launcher does not have a signature that Windows can use to verify who it comes from. Code signing is a good practice, but prohibitively expensive for a free game. For this warning, assuming that you downloaded it from a trusted source, you can safely click More info, then Run anyway. This doesn't disable any antivirus protection - there should be no circumstance where you need to turn off antivirus protection or add a blanket exclusion to the game folder.

2. Install .NET 6 (if necessary)

If opening the launcher asks for .NET 6.0, download it here from Microsoft, or follow the link offered by the popup. The installer should be named windowsdesktop-runtime-6.0.36-win-x64.exe. Complete that installer, then reopen launcher.exe normally.

If you get an error that specifically names TorrentLib, you may also be missing the Microsoft Visual C++ x64 Redistributable.

3. Choose a fresh installation folder

  1. On the welcome screen, select Next and wait for the launcher to discover the latest release. You may need to allow the launcher to access the network.
  2. Choose a dedicated, empty folder you can write to. Avoid protected system directories and folders containing unrelated files. A non-cloud-synced folder under your user account is a practical choice since Desktop and Documents may be redirected into OneDrive on some PCs. When you pick a folder, the launcher will offer a 'ElDewrito' subdirectory of that folder.
  3. Check the destination looks right and that you have enough storage space.
  4. Choose whether to add a desktop shortcut, then select Install.

Keep the installation in this location while downloading and establishing that it works, but you can move the directory later if you change your mind.

4. Download and launch

  1. Let the launcher download and install the game. Peer availability and your connection affect progress; there is no fixed completion time.
  2. When installation finishes and the main launcher appears, select Play. If a release lookup, download, or startup fails, use the matching Troubleshooting section rather than deleting the installation.
  3. Once the game opens, continue to Playing for controls, settings, the server browser, and joining a game. Close the game and reopen it from the installed launcher or its shortcut before adding optional modifications.

Updates and optional seeding

You can use the launcher in your installation folder for subsequent launches. It checks for updates at startup; Settings → Updates provides a manual check and automatic-update options. Close the game before applying an update, and back up personal content before a repair or substantial change.

Seeding shares the installed game with other players. It is helpful but is an opt-in choice, not a condition of playing:

  1. Open Settings → Seeding. The gear button lets you configure the upload-rate limit and whether or not you Auto Seed.
  2. Set an upload limit appropriate to your connection, return to the seeding page, and select Start when you want to share.
  3. Select Stop to stop that seeding session. Turn off Auto Seed if you do not want seeding to resume when the launcher opens.

Migrate content from an old installation

Preserve your old installation and a separate backup of personal settings, maps, and game variants, and first establish a working, unmodified 0.7 installation. Re-enter preferences through the new settings interface; do not copy an entire legacy configuration over it. For map/game variants, it should be possible to migrate them using Epsilon. See Convert older 0.6 variants.
